ABOUT US – YOUR TROOP LEADERS
Laura Bock & Dariti Peterson (Photo of us was taken at our troop's Bronze Award Ceremony last year.)

I'm Laura Bock (on the left). I this is my 13th year involved in girl scouting, 6 years as a girl, and now 7 years as an adult leader. I was previously a leader in Upper Darby, PA in the Southeastern PA council for 4 years. My daughter and I joined this troop in 2005. I enjoy Co-leading the troop with Dariti, and watching the girls grow in scouting.

My name is Dariti Peterson (on the right). I am a life-time member of Girl Scouts. I decided to become a leader when my daughter bridged from Daisies to Brownies in 2002. Our family relocated here from Austin, Texas in October 2004. I heard this troop was going to have to disband, so I vounteered to lead it, and when I had twins in 2005, I was so happy that Laura joined to help lead the troop!

We really appreciate the extra help from parent volunteers, because we can't do it all ourselves. I hope we can count on you for help, and support when needed!

REGISTRATION
The GSUSA registration fee for one year is $10, and financial assistance is available. This fee goes directly to GSUSA, and covers the Girl Scout Accident insurance, in the event that a member is injured at a GS event.

All parent volunteers must be registered as Girl Scouts (Dad, you can be a Girl Scout too!). It is easy, and helps our troop be able to participate in more things. See me for registration materials.
Please return all registration materials to me as quickly as possible, girls are not able to attend meetings before they are registered.

MEETINGS
We meet twice a month, Wednesdays, directly afterschool at GWES. The room and dates will be listed on the Meetings page. We should meet about 18-20* times this year.

*Occasionally, the troop may decide to do an extra event, or do a service project that would add to our regular meeting calendar, so always check the Troop News, and Calendar “Upcoming Events” section.

I will email any changes in meeting or event dates or times, so please be sure to check your email. If you do not have email - I will try to contact you by phone, but it is always a good idea to check with the other parents to see if they have received any emails. Voicemail and answering machines are not always reliable.

TROOP DUES
Troops set their own troop dues depending on the economics of the group and the anticipated activities. Financial Assistance is available if needed.

8/27/05 - A decision was made to pay $20/girl to the troop at the beginning of the year instead of having girls bring a dollar to each meeting. Please make checks payable to "Freedom Valley Girl Scouts - Troop 1572," or "FVGS - Troop 1572."

Please ask your daughter to do something for earning her dues. She could do an extra chore at home per week, or help out another family member, or neighbor at least once a week. For example, perhaps Grandpa needs help sorting his mail, cleaning, or would enjoy a game of checkers a couple of times per week.

SUPPLIES
Craft and Badge activity supplies are usually not free, and we may want to add a supply fee to our troop dues. Any donations made to the troop are gladly accepted! Things we are often in need of are scissors, safety pins, craft pin backs, glue sticks, pens, and markers.

HANDBOOKS
Junior Handbook
Junior Badgebook

I recommend that all girls at least get the Junior Badge Book. Girls may work on Badges outside troop meetings. Many class/school activities can count toward a badge. Six requirements are needed for each badge. Teachers or Parents must sign next to the activity that was completed. Girls will need to show their work toward the badge in some manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES
As Juniors, the leader takes another step back, as the girls gain more responsibility of how their troop functions.

Girls are in charge (with guidance when needed) of what we do as a troop. The girls are responsible for management of meetings, planning events, ceremonies, spending troop money, etc.

TROOP GOVERNMENT
This year we will be exploring a new form of troop government, called the “Patrol System.” We currently have three patrols, and will rotate the Patrol Leader position every five meetings. Each Patrol is responsible for making sure every girl in the patrol is aware, and a part of, all events, activities, and decision making that the troop is working on. Patrol Leaders are "sworn in" and have to make sure that their patrol abides by the Girl Scout Law and Promise.

FUND-RAISERS
We have two GSUSA fund-raisers per year. Participation in fund-raisers is optional, however without fundraiser money, the troop will not be able to participate in as many things.

>>The more money the troop raises through fund-raisers, the less out of parent’s pockets. If your daughter chooses not to participate in the fund-raiser for which a troop goal was set, it will be up to the parent for her financial responsibility to participate in the goal activity/event.

The girls will vote on events they would like to attend, or places they would like to go with the money they make. If the goal is exceeded, the rest will help with badges, patches, troop supplies, and troop ceremonies/parties. We are also allowed to have our own troop fund-raisers, if a specific dollar amount is set as our goal (and documentation is provided for that amount).

The Be a Reader and Nut Program, in October is a Candy/Nut, and magazine subscription fund-raiser. It is a good way for our troop to make a little money in the beginning of the school year, so please participate if you can. The Candy and Nut tins make excellent holiday gifts - and you get more candy/nuts by volume, at a lower price than other school fund-raisers.

The Girl Scout Cookie sale is usually from mid. January - mid. February. The girls had such a great time doing cookie booths last year, and we hope to have more fun this year!

NEWSLETTERS
This year I will not be producing a printed newsletter. Please be sure to check the Troop News page at least once a week for news on what we did at the last meeting, and what is coming up.

PLEASE be sure to read TROOP NEWS, MEETINGS, and CALENDAR pages and note important dates on your family calendar. I strongly advise having a family calendar with school and organization events listed. It really helps me!

PHOTO RELEASES
I am a photographer, and take lots of photos. I include these photos in our Newsletters, print them for the girls’ scrapbooks, and often submit them for publications. GSUSA has strict guidelines about photo usage, and revealing girls identities, so please be assured that your daughter’s photo will only be used with these guidelines in place. Please sign a photo release form.

TROOP SPONSORS
If your business, or the business of a friend or relative can donate to, or sponsor our troop in any way - PLEASE have them call me, or let me know who I need to contact!

VOLUNTEERS
We need volunteers to help out as Troop Committee Members. These are listed on the last page of “Set Sail in Girl Scouting,” on the Parent/Guardian Survey. Check off any and all areas in which you might be able to help our troop. This survey is just so I can get an idea of what your interests are - you are not necessarily volunteering for a particular chair.

According to GSUSA, there is a 1:6 registered adult to child safety ratio needed at every meeting and event. At our regular meetings, a minimum of 2 registered adults must be present for the current number of girls. If our members increase I will need more parent volunteers for our troop to continue.

Without parent involvement, troops do not survive, so please remember that you are needed. (Remember – Leaders are volunteers also!)

YOU & YOUR IDEAS ARE WELCOME!
I encourage parent involvement with the troop - registered parents (yes - Dads too!) are welcome at meetings and events. All I ask is that parent volunteers allow me to help their daughter, while they help another child, so their dependence does not rely upon you (especially if you will not attend every meeting).

Offer your ideas at any time! If anyone is able to have the troop go on a tour of their work place, or has someone interesting that the girls would enjoy coming to visit the troop, that would be great! However, all activities have to be approved by our service unit, and permission slips have to be signed for every event, so I’m afraid we can’t do many “spur of the moment” activities.

Please email your ideas to me!
